The Festival started out in 2007 as a small event initiated by Kensington public housing tenants as part of the Victorian State Government’s Housing Week. It’s aim was to celebrate cultural diversity and community connection within the Kensington Redevelopment (a former public housing high rise estate) and connect with the broader Kensington community.
From its inception the purpose has been to;
- Strengthen connections between the Kensington Redevelopment and the wider community
- Celebrate and showcase the local community with activities that foster a spirit of togetherness, fun and cultural exchange
- Promote local business, community and government services and agencies
The Festival has a fabulous atmosphere with live music from China to Cuba, the Kensington Sustainable Living Expo, food from all corners of the globe, henna hand painting, community stalls, face-painting, AFL challenge inflatables, treasure hunts, an animal farm, workshops and African drumming. That is just a sample of the day’s activities and entertainment!
For sports fans the Festival also incorporates the AFL Victoria Multicultural Program and AFP co-hosted Unity Cup, a touch 9 footy round robin where twenty culturally diverse male and female teams compete for the coveted Unity Cup trophy.
